As you are probably aware, HM Revenue (HMRC) is sending 6.5 million letters to taxpayers saying that they either owe more tax, or are due a refund.
If you receive a letter demanding you repay tax, or you receive a tax refund, you should NOT automatically assume that HMRC's figures are correct. There may be valid reasons why you should pay less, in some cases much less, or the amount of your refund should be higher.
In both cases, it's highly likely HMRC have not included any tax allowances or expenses you were entitled to claim over the past 6 years!
